An Exploration of Cannabis Culture Around the World
Nods to Norms: Vienna
In our exploratory series Nods to Norms, we’ll learn how cannabis is perceived across the globe through the local perspectives of the international artists we collaborate with. Each artist will share their unique insights and experiences, allowing us to delve into the diverse weed cultures of various cities, starting with an Austrian perspective from Vienna.
Yvonne Rausch
We sat down with local ceramic artist – and friend of the Flower Pot – Yvonne Rausch to explore how cannabis fits into daily life in Austria’s capital. Here’s a snapshot of Vienna’s cannabis scene from a local lens.
How is cannabis culture in Vienna—more out in the open or kept discreet?
Austria remains a conservative country that is slow to accept the “new” or “not proper.” As a result, cannabis culture is generally discreet. While personal possession is decriminalized (up to 5 or 8 grams, if I remember correctly), public use remains illegal. Most people consume cannabis privately, particularly within Vienna’s artistic and alternative subcultures, where it’s embraced as part of wellness and mindfulness lifestyles.
Is cannabis part of a daily ritual or saved for special occasions there?
For certain groups, cannabis is a casual part of life rather than something reserved for special occasions. People often connect over it at events and workshops, integrating it into their daily lives and communities.
Where is weed typically grown in Austria?
Recreational cannabis cultivation is illegal, but you’ll find plenty of CBD shops, known as "Hanfläden," in Vienna. These shops primarily offer CBD products. Medicinal cannabis is legal but heavily regulated and imported. Some shops sell growing kits that include special lighting and ventilation—creating the perfect environment for growing weed (wink, wink).
Are there any celebrities or notable public figures in Vienna who are pro-cannabis?
Not really. However, political movements like the Green Party and the liberal NEOS party have been increasingly vocal about cannabis reform, suggesting that public support may be growing through them.
What are the best local snacks to satisfy the munchies in Vienna?
Vienna's snack aisles aren't as stocked as they are in the U.S., but there are still some great options! If you’re out and about, grab a Käsekrainer—a sausage with cheese inside, perfect for that savory fix. At home, I always keep Soletti Chips Cracker Käse on hand. They’re a recent hit and impossible to stop eating! For sweets, I love Katjes vegan gummies or nimm2—a hard candy that softens after a bite. The sour edition is my favorite.
Do you have any favorite local TV shows or movies to watch after a puff?
I'm all about trash TV! Reality TV drama is the best after a puff—it’s hilarious and the perfect way to unwind. Anything from the 2010s dating shows on MTV is a guilty pleasure, especially “Are You the One.” But my absolute favorites are the “Real Housewives” series (because, of course!) and **“Below Deck”—**the drama on that show is just way too funny, haha!
How is cannabis and parenting viewed in Vienna?
Vienna is still quite conservative when it comes to cannabis and parenting. The younger generations are a bit more open-minded, but there's still an evolving attitude towards it.
Anything else interesting in the weed industry worth noting?
Vienna’s CBD culture is growing rapidly, and there’s a noticeable shift in public opinion. While recreational weed is still illegal, more people are curious about the benefits of cannabis. With continued political support, we might see more changes in the coming years.
